Why should you get a family photography session?

Your family is a constantly changing organism. A family photography session forever encapsulates moments in your family’s life. A large framed family photo isn’t always in the budget each year, so I recommend an updated family portrait session every three years to truly see a change. With that being said, if you add another child to the family, certainly come in for a newborn photography session and update the family portrait at the same time.

Children change drastically in their first five years, so – again – I always recommend a family photography session at least three times within the first five years of life. In a family photography session, I love to capture a range of emotions, documenting multiple expressions. Happy? Sad? It's all good.

A family portrait session will almost always occur at a local park in West Hartford, CT, or in Hartford County. Or, for those colder months, family photography sessions almost always take place at my studio, also located in West Hartford, CT. Each family photography session begins with a phone consultation followed by an in-person consultation, where we begin to plan out your session. The in-person consultation is where we can lock down a location and the colors that you imagine for your session.

We will discuss the factors shaping your family and the photos you'd most like to capture. For example, you may be updating the children’s rooms and want to focus more on the kids with just a couple of photos with all of you. Or it could be that the family portrait is your most important objective. During the consultation, we will fully discuss pricing and packages. This helps people get excited about seeing their photographs on their walls.

Family Photography FAQs

What if it rains on the date of our family photography session?

Your children are unpredictable and so is the weather! If we need to reschedule your family photography session, no problem! I take on a very limited amount of family sessions a month to account for the weather’s unpredictability.

What should we wear to our family photography session?

During our consultation, we go over styling and clothing, but I always recommend choosing a color palette and building outfits around that. Textures and layers are always welcome. A quick outfit change is always welcome as well. I do not recommend more than two outfit changes for a family photography session.

Can I bring a prop or two for our session?

You most certainly can. I love making each family photography session as personal as possible.

What is the process after the photo session is completed?

Typically, the turnaround time for a family session is eight to ten business days. We will then determine a time for you to come and review your photos in an ordering session. This is always clients' favorite part of the process because they get to see their photos for the first time and see mock-ups of framed products or canvases on their walls. And if wall space is an issue, I always recommend a custom heirloom album. An album is a product you can keep returning to and enjoy with family for generations to come.

So, why family photography?

These photographs celebrate this stage in your child’s life. He will never be missing his front teeth again. She will never be learning to blow bubbles again. These may be everyday occurrences, but having a professional photographer take these moments and turn them into cherished ones is something special.
